Aftorizo 2020 from Thymiopoulos Vineyards is a single-vineyard Xinomavro from Naoussa, sourced from an ungrafted, 54-year-old parcel in the mountainous area of Fytia. The vines sit at about 450 metres altitude on schist- and granite-based soils, benefitting from a pronounced diurnal range and constant air circulation from Mount Vermio, which preserves acidity, aromatic detail and finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand, 60% destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, followed by around 20 days of maceration and 12 months of ageing in 500-litre second-use French oak barrels. The result is a finely etched, low-intervention Xinomavro with 13.5% alcohol and a clear sense of place.

On the nose, Aftorizo is highly aromatic and complex, with a wide floral bouquet of rose and violet, intertwined with red cherry, cranberry, sundried tomato and subtle earthy-mineral tones. On the palate, the wine is elegant and vertical, with vibrant acidity, beautifully sculpted, powdery tannins and a distinct mineral backbone that gives precision and length. Layers of savoury spice and umami notes unfold with air, leading to a long, resonant finish with “infinite” aromas and aftertaste, as befits this tiny-production, single-parcel Xinomavro.

This is a Xinomavro for Burgundy and Barolo lovers alike, ideal with braised beef, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, tomato-based dishes or earthy vegetarian plates such as mushroom ragù or stuffed Portobello mushrooms. You can enjoy it now with a short aeration, or cellar it for up to a decade to explore its full ageing potential.
