In the Barrique range from Ktima Ligas, Kydonitsa takes centre stage. A lesser-known Greek grape variety, presented here with rich texture, concentration and balanced acidity. Kydonitsa is an indigenous Greek variety that has made a strong comeback in recent years. Ktima Ligas’s approach to winemaking shows that it can go beyond its enticing, playful aromas and take on another dimension – with structure, depth and complexity.
The grapes are destemmed, and the whole berries remain in contact with the juice for seven days in a stainless steel tank, allowing for gentle extraction. Fermentation takes place at 17–18°C. The still-fermenting juice is then transferred to 400-litre Austrian oak barrels. The wine ages in the same barrels on its lees for six months.
In the glass, it shows a deep lemon colour with orange highlights. On the nose, citrus fruit, candied lemon peel and peach combine with quince, apricot and notes of beeswax. The palate is full-bodied, with fresh acidity and a long finish. Peppery notes and salinity add another dimension. Limited Edition.
The label features Katina Paxinou – one of Greece’s most important actresses. For her role as Pilar in For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1944.
Our pairing? Movie Night – perhaps For Whom the Bell Tolls.
