Majulina 2020

Color: deep ruby red

Nose: On the nose, this wine unfolds a bouquet of inviting and complex aromas. Bright notes of ripe red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, mingle with hints of dried herbs and floral nuances. Subtle spice notes, reminiscent of white pepper and cloves, add depth, while a touch of minerality highlights the terroir of the Apuan hills.

Palate: On the palate, discovering the aromas is a delicate exploration. The Majulina 2020 reveals an elegant balance between fruitiness and structure. Juicy fruit aromas dominate, complemented by a refreshing acidity that underscores the wine's vibrancy. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, resulting in a silky mouthfeel that carries the wine elegantly across the palate. Layers of aromas unfold, including earthy nuances and a hint of savory herbs, creating a harmonious and captivating profile.

Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of red fruit and a delicate minerality that invites another sip. A pleasant freshness balances the wine's richness, making it a versatile companion to a wide variety of dishes.

Food pairings: Excellent with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and hearty lasagna Bolognese. It also harmonizes well with various cheeses, especially aged varieties and those with herb-infused profiles.

Calafata

Mauro Montanaro is more than just a winemaker, and Calafata is more than a simple winery. It's a remarkable project in the hills above Lucca, where the foothills of the Apuan Alps lie to the north and the Mediterranean coast is only 20 km away to the west. Vineyards here had lain fallow since the late 1990s. Mauro and his friends convinced the owners to lease them the vineyards, some of which were up to 90 years old. Gradually, locals helped by providing more vineyards, equipment, tanks, and barrels. Over the years, a project characterized by revitalization, dedication, and community spirit emerged. Today, the three friends produce five exquisite wines from some indigenous, ancient grape varieties. They also cultivate 13 hectares of vegetable fields and 7 hectares of olive groves and employ 15 people – all political refugees, former drug addicts, or others marginalized by society.
